Joe Chappelle is an American film and television director and producer. He served as co-executive producer on the third
and fourth season
of
The Wire and is a regular director for the series.
Series creator
David Simon credits Chappelle with choosing the music for the season three closing montage; Solomon Burke's cover of Van Morrison's "Fast Train" which appeared in the episode "
Mission Accomplished".
Chappelle directed episode 3.11 "
Middle Ground",
which received the show's only Emmy nomination to date, for writers
David Simon and
George Pelecanos in the category
Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
He is also a producer and director for CSI Miami.
Chappelle graduated from Northwestern University and worked in Chicago's advertising community before breaking into film with the independently produced
Thieves Quartet in 1993. Joe Chapelle is not a relative of actor/comedian Dave Chappelle.
