John McConnell (born
November 13,
1958), aka
John "Spud" McConnell, is an American actor and a radio personality based in
New Orleans,
Louisiana.
He has acted in more than 40 movies. McConnell is a character actor who appears regularly in movies set or filmed in the
Gulf Coast region. He has also appeared in numerous plays, including a run Off-Broadway in the one-man show
The Kingfish, wherein he portrayed colorful Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long. He is perhaps best-known for having portrayed Ignatius J. Reilly in
A Confederacy of Dunces. For that role, he has been honored with a life-sized bronze statue on historic Canal Street in downtown New Orleans. Literary fans travel from across the globe to see "Ignatius" from the
Pulitzer Prize winning novel.
On television, McConnell made appearances over three seasons on
Roseanne with good friend and colleague
John Goodman. Most recently, McConnell is featured in a recurring role on the
FX series
The Riches, starring
Eddie Izzard and
Minnie Driver.
