Casting Director Renee Godbout explains why isolating your best features increases your chance to land a role
By Renee Godbout
It’s not ego to know what your best trait is. When you go to a photographer to have your headshots taken, you need to know what type of shots will show your best side. Don’t count on your photographer to dictate your makeup or hairstyle. It’s your responsibility to show up to that photo shoot prepared.
It’s also important to look at yourself critically – but don’t go overboard. Remember, this is all about focusing on your best assets and deciding what’s going to help you get cast!
Have fun with the mirror and experiment with different types of make-up and hairstyles, and always work with your natural coloring. For example, if you’ve got a pale complexion, stay away from bright eye shadow and save the vibrant colors for your wardrobe.
Don’t hesitate to seek out other people’s opinions. Ask your friends which looks, styles, and poses accentuate your assets and downplay any features you’re not comfortable with.
When it comes to taking photos, remember that your headshot is your calling card and the first thing any casting director or agent sees. It should not be overly touched-up and fake-looking. Make sure your photographer finds natural way to highlight your best attributes.
Knowing your best traits will help in taking a great headshot, but it will also be useful when you’re applying for auditions. If you’ve got a thick, full head of hair, then hair product commercials could be a great way to start your career. Some shoe commercials don’t show a women’s upper body, which is wonderful for women whose legs are their best assets. Play up your strengths and you’ll start finding roles that are perfect for you!
