InstantCast Spotlight: Gregory Becknel

Only 14 Years Old and Almost a Star!

Gregory Becknel InstantCast Member Gregory Becknel won a singing competition at the famous Apollo Theater last month. Despite being only fourteen years old this New Orleans native received a standing ovation.

This month, Gregory went from singing star at the Apollo to movie star. Gregory spent six days on set of the new film Robosapien. He heard about this opportunity by searching for parts on InstantCast!

Robosapien is an action-adventure kids' film. It follows a robot and a human boy who team up to save their parents from the robot's evil creator. They are filming in the West Bank of New Orleans, Louisiana and the film will be released in 2009.

Gregory spent six full days filming at a local middle school. He was featured in three scenes: The first scene was filmed on a basketball court, which was great for Gregory because this is his "favorite sport." In this scene he played basketball alongside the film's star "Harry," played by the acclaimed young actor Bobby Coleman and three other extras. Although he is a soft-spoken boy, I could tell from Gregory's tone that playing basketball next to this child star was the highlight of his on-set experience.

In the next scene Gregory "strutted his stuff" down a middle school hallway, playing a student. In his last scene, he was "dancing" in a school auditorium. From singing to acting to dancing, Gregory seems to know it all! And, what's the best part? He got paid!

So what does the future hold for this young talent? When he's not busy on-set, or at school, Gregory has been working on his own R&B demo. His ringtone features Gregory singing a Goo Goo Dolls song and leaves me bursting with excitement to hear what's next from this emerging star!

Congrats Gregory! Don't forget to give a shout out to InstantCast when you get your first Grammy & Oscar!

Q:

Like a lot of aspiring actors, I work in a restaurant most days. But I find that my day job is getting in the way of auditions. When should I take the plunge and start acting full-time?

A:
