Getting Cast in a Music Video

expert advice Q: I heard that music video gigs pay well. How can I get cast in a music video?

A: Music videos are a great way to build your resume and make connections with casting directors, not to mention earn a healthy paycheck without much of a time commitment. Most music videos are shot in New York, Miami, and L.A., so talent and casting agencies in those areas will most likely cast the music video. If you don't belong to an agency yet, but would like to try your hand at a music video, you can access online casting calls on site like InstantCast and for music videos. Given the wide variety of content, most calls will have very specific listings for the type of people they're looking for, i.e. age, ethnicity, and hair color. Many require wearing revealing clothing or swimsuits or expect dance skills. Make sure you match the stated requirements and are able to perform the activities listed.

Once you've found music videos you'd like to apply for, send a headshot and resume to the casting director. If don't find anything specific, you can also send a headshot/resume/cover letter to a casting director who specializes in music video stating your interest and what kind of roles you're suited for, and if you'd prefer to be featured or an extra. If you want to be a featured singer or musician in a video, you should apply through a talent agent who knows how to package a market your skills. Music video shoots also occasionally have open casting calls to pick out background dancers and extras, so also keep your eyes open for listings online and in trade papers, and if you go make sure to stand out because hundreds of people show up and casting directors move through them quickly. And if you're really interested in music video work, make sure you can dance!

Q:

I finally attended an audition last week. I studied my monologue for a few days and was ready to show them my talent. Then, when the casting director called me in to perform, they took one look at me and gave me a whole different monologue to read ice cold! I was so nervous an unprepared that I blew it. How can I better prepare for a cold read next time?

A:

A cold read can be a scary thing. You've never read the script in your life, so how can you give your best performance? Well, you don't have to...
